Guide to Teacher Resources
Here are some education resources on different areas of studies including ESL, journalism, music, math, science, and art. This will help any teachers just starting out to learn the basics on education and application of the field. Please refer to our other guides on various topics as you continue your research and studies.
Successful ongoing education is something that everyone should hope for. This could mean going back to college, succeeding at grade school, middle-school, high school and college, or simply learning on your own. This list of websites is meant to address all of those concerns. Are you thinking of returning to college? There are some links here for that, as well as applying for grants and loans. For the teacher, there are a few links that include lesson plans and information about kids of various ages. The teacher can also use the educational links provided, such as The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, NASA, and Classical Archives (an online library of classical music) in order to help out in the classroom. These same links can be used by people who are simply interested in learning. In addition, a few links have been added for those looking for math, science, history, or language help among other subjects.
Grants and Similar Services
These websites offer grants for those wishing to go back to school. A grant is like a loan, except that it does not have to be paid back. Government websites, private institutions and non-government grant search services are featured. Visit one of these sites if you feel like going to college or graduate school.
- Grants.gov - An official government website. Find and apply for government grants here.
- Grants.net – A website that offers resources on finding grants for higher education. Also features a “find a job” section.
- The Sloan Foundation – A non-profit organization. Also features ways to apply for grants.
- Verizon Foundation – Part of Verizon’s online presence. Features grants, including one for the math or engineering teacher looking to expand his or her horizons.
- NEA Foundation – Provides grants for teachers, students and other educational professionals.
- Yahoo! Education - Yahoo’s official education site. Features ways to find an education and put it to use.
Common Application
The common application is the place to start when applying for colleges online. Many different colleges accept this application, and are even searchable in the online database.
Online Educational Multi-Media Experiences
These websites, most from well-known companies and government agencies such as The History Channel and NASA, offer lifelong learning experiences. Visit one of these websites for a full multi-media experience, including streaming audio and video. The television networks feature information about their shows, and there are other opportunities as well. For example, The Philedalphia Museum of art offers a website, as well as the Classical Archives, which offers free downloads of classical music.
- Discovery Channel Online – The official website of the Discovery Channel. It provides information and videos about its shows.
- Philedalphia Museum of Art – The Philedalphia Museum of Art offers a special web page for educators. Includes information about arranging field trips, and what is on display.
- NASA – NASA’s homepage. Offers news and resources about current projects, including multimedia.
- The History Channel Online – The History Channel’s online presence is here. Features “This Day in History” and information about its shows.
- PBS Science – PBS offers a variety of scientific articles to read. All available online.
- Federal Resources for Educational Excellence – An official government website. It provides resources such as educational music and art downloads.
- Video Placement World Wide – Free online educational videos. Includes categories for different grade levels, through college.
- Web Exhibits – An interactive online museum. Web Exhibits specializes in science, humanities and culture.
- Exploratorium – An online museum. Features exhibits on science, art and human perception.
Online Resources for Various Subjects
These websites provide help for the student who is interested in learning more about everything from music and art to the math and science fields. There is a website offering help with music theory, as well as one offering free classical music downloads. For the mathematically oriented student, Wolfram Mathematica offers an extensive online database of formulas and theories. There are also resources for subjects such as journalism, English, ESL and others.
ESL
- ESL Gold – An English as Second Language Website. Provides resources for both the student and teacher in a variety of different primary languages.
Journalism
- High School Journalism - Hsj.org provides a variety of resources for the high school journalist or journalism teacher. Provides free image searching and a wired news program for a fee.
- Plagiarism Workshop – A workshop for everyone. It takes about an hour, discusses what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.
- K12 News – A news website. Provides real-time streaming news headlines.
Music
- Online Music Theory – A music theory workshop website. Offers lessons, trainers and utilities.
- Classical Archives – Includes archives of various classical music for free. Songs are in the MIDI format.
- MidiGate - A free software download. Allows you to listen to MIDI files, such as from Classical Archives, in this stand-alone player.
Math
- Wolfram Math World – Wolfram offers an extensive math website for students and teachers. Includes free resources, categorized for your convenience, explaining different theorems and formulas in the math realm.
- Online Scientific Calculator - An online scientific calculator. Use this for homework assignments and such if you don’t have access to another one.
- Understanding Calculus – This online textbook offers help for the student venturing to study calculus. Includes a table of contents and clear explanations for things such as integrals and derivatives.
- Animated Calculus Graphs - Once again, a resource for the student venturing to learn calculus. This website offers animated graphs for the visual learner that helps to make studying advanced concepts easier.
- WikiEducator Presents: Trigonometry – WikiEducator, a good resource in itself, presents a clear place to start on your quest to learn about trigonometry. The website is easily approachable and has different categories for different areas of trigonometry.
- Math Dictionary - An math dictionary for younger students. Every term includes an interactive demonstration.
- Create a Graph – For students wishing to create graphs. Includes tools for mathematical graphing as well as bar and pie graphs.
Sciences
- Sure Q – Sure Q offers a variety of software for sale. More importantly, it provides free image galleries for math and science.
- The Mad Scientist Library – A library for the budding scientist that has links to various different topics. Topics are sorted by field.
- Reeko’s Mad Scientist Lab – Reeko the Mad Scientist offers a laboratory with experiments. A source of free science experiments for people of all ages.
- Windows to the Universe – Windows to the Universe offers a whole lot of resources for those interested in studying astronomy. Includes everything from information about the history of astronomy to multimedia experiences.
English
- The Works of the Bard – Shakespeare’s collected works online. Free to access and read.
- Encyclopedia Mythica – An online encyclopedia. Features everything mythological.
- Library of Congress Online Card Catalogue - The Library of Congress offers a location to look up and find the card numbers of any books. Can search by subject, call number, keywords, titles, authors and much more.
- Kid Pub – A very cool website for students to read and publish their own stories. Includes the ability to comment.
Art
- Art History - Provides links about art history. Has a large variety of well-organized resources.
Foreign Language
- Educational Freeware - Has links to free software that can be downloaded and used. Includes games and educational tools such as language learning software.
Resources for Grade-School Children
This section on younger kids includes a lot of links to make learning fun, but still educational! Use these resources to help your child excel at home or in the classroom. Most of the links in this section are for children in grade school, although could find some use in middle school as well.
- Fact Monster -An online almanac for kids. Provides a variety of information in a fun environment.
- Math Glossary - An online glossary of math terms for children in grade school. Includes terms by grade level and lots of fun pictures.
- Kinder Art – Where art and science meet. Provides art projects for teachers.
- MiKids – A resource for younger children. Includes a library and a games section, among other things.
- Kids Click – A search engine perfect for kids. Includes a keyword search bar and category search.
- Quillo’s Online Zoo -An online zoo! Take your students on a field trip to visit various animals.
- SurfNetKids – Surf the net with your kids. Offers a large listing of pre-screened websites.
- Family Education Network – Provides information about raising a family and kids of different ages.
- Linda’s Learning Links – A website that provides links to a variety of topics to help with your kindergarten or grade-school child. Includes resources such as how to help with math or reading at home.
- LINKS Learning – Provides some basic math lessons for the younger child. Also has some audio books on file.
