Education Teaching Techniques and Tips

A teacher who is just beginning his or her career needs to build a store of helpful knowledge. For instance, learning about a variety of teaching techniques can help a teacher to decide which one to use in his or her classroom. Simple teaching tips can also be useful in handling a large or challenging class. In short, a new teacher can incorporate teaching techniques as well as tips to create a dynamic learning environment.

Teaching Tips

A valuable teaching tip can sometimes be the difference between an average lesson and an engaging one. A good teaching tip can improve an educator’s teaching style or make a dry lesson more interesting. Alternatively, a teaching tip can point out a mistake a teacher is making in the classroom so he or she can correct it. Teaching tips can prove helpful for both new and seasoned educators.

  • Move around the classroom while teaching a lesson in order to focus and engage each student’s attention.
  • Involve students in a lesson by asking them questions and looking for input.
  • Be willing to adjust a lesson if many students are puzzled by the material. Furthermore, a teacher should be prepared to change his or her approach to make a lesson more accessible.
  • Be flexible in presenting a lesson. For instance, if a student brings up a question that starts an interesting discussion (that is lesson-related) it can be an opportunity for learning.
  • Ask an interesting question or make an intriguing point at the end of a class period in order to leave students with something to think about until the next class.

Improving Teaching Techniques

The appropriate teaching technique can oftentimes make a challenging lesson easier for students to understand. For instance, a lecture on fractions may not be effective in helping students understand the lesson. Alternatively, a teacher who uses shapes, blocks, or other visual aids may be more successful in conveying a lesson on fractions to a classroom of young students. A teacher should choose a teaching technique that will suit the lesson.

  • Using visual aids during a lesson often helps students better absorb the information.
  • Dividing the class into small groups allows students to convey valuable information to one another. For instance, if students are divided into small groups to discuss a short story they are able to share their individual impressions and knowledge regarding the material.
  • If a teacher is giving a lecture on a novel, he or she may ask students to read certain passages aloud in order to highlight significant points of the lesson.
  • A class activity can often engage students’ interest in the subject matter. For instance, a teacher may create several stations for students to visit throughout a class period in order to learn more about a particular topic in science.

Discipline in the Classroom

A teacher must create and maintain a peaceful environment in order for students to learn. Furthermore, a teacher should never allow any student to disrupt the learning of others. In short, a teacher must be clear about the classroom rules and enforce them. Fortunately, there are many things that teachers can do to maintain classroom discipline.

  • Establish a clear set of rules on the first day of classes and outline the consequences of breaking them.
  • Be sure to encourage and praise students who contribute to the peaceful environment of the classroom.
  • If a student is breaking a classroom rule, speak to him or her in a calm, firm voice.
  • Be consistent in enforcing classroom rules in order to maintain the respect of the students.

In order to benefit students, educators must continually strive to improve their teaching skills. An educator should always be on the lookout for new and exciting ways to teach a lesson.
